1.  Course Overview

This is the perfect short course for working professionals in Singapore whose first language is not English and who want to write skillfully at work. This course will revise your knowledge of critical grammar structures and rules as well as focus on improving key skills leading to clear and accurate writing in everyday work related writing and correspondence such as emails, letters, minutes of meetings, reports and social media. Knowing the proper way to communicate in writing will help promote your self-confidence, increase your skill levels, and help you in your job advancement and promotion. In a nutshell, this course is ideal for anyone wishing to polish their grammar and writing skills. 

The 48 hour course is divided into two 24 hour modules with each module developing a setting for using and improving your writing skills. The first module of 12 sessions focus on reviewing and improving your use of critical grammar rules and sentence structures so as to develop your practical writing skills. This part of the course is recommended for students with an intermediate level of grammar who need to focus on strengthening their grammar skills. 

The second module of 12 sessions focus on applying grammar rules as well as ensuring your writing meets standard professional guidelines i.e. coherent, cohesive, and demonstrates a natural use of appropriate collocations and business phrases in different writing formats such as emails, letters, minutes’ of meetings, reports and social media. This module is recommended for working professionals with an Upper Intermediate level of grammar and writing who need to focus on strengthening their professionalism.

If your placement test result is at Upper-Intermediate level or above, you can decide to study one or both modules, the choice is yours. If your placement test result is at Intermediate level, we recommend you study both the grammar for writing module and the writing for work module, but the choice is yours.

3. Application Procedure

Step 1: Take a Free Writing Placement Test at Ascend Education Centre

To apply for this course you will need to take a free placement test at our Centre with our professionally qualified teacher.

The test will take 30-45 minutes. The purpose of the test is to find out your current level of written English. Your written language level must be at least an Intermediate level – Upper Intermediate level as this course is for working professionals in Singapore whose written English is at a similar level. This way the participants in the course can communicate effectively with each other. In addition, all course participants must be a minimum age of 16 by the course commencement date. Please bring your IC/Passport with you for identification purposes.

Step 2: Decide if you want to enroll by completing Application Form and pay fees

Upon receiving your writing test result from our professional teacher and provided it is between Intermediate to Upper Intermediate levels, you can decide if you wish to apply for the course. The choice is yours. To apply for admission, you need to fill in the application form and pay a non-refundable application fee of $60.50 for administrative purposes.  We recommend for students that are at an intermediate level that they take both modules of the course. Students at an Upper Intermediate level have the option of taking the two modules or just one.

 We believe in customer choice and we believe you should be in a class where you are satisfied with the service we are providing you with. If you are unhappy, for any reason, with your course and you decide to withdraw within seven days of commencing your course, we will refund you 95% of your course fees within seven working days.

6. Teaching Methodology & Materials

To achieve the key learning outcomes of this course our professionally trained teachers will provide topic-based language using authentic and adapted materials and motivating learner-centred activities such as mini-presentations and discussions in the classroom. This way, you will have ample opportunities to apply the language you need to know to write with greater clarity and accuracy in a variety of workplace situations.

Angela Edwards,
Originally from Britain but now an Australian, Angela has recently returned to live in Singapore after gaining her CELTA qualifications in Melbourne, Australia. 8.  Certificate

You will be awarded with a Certificate of Attendance by Ascend – The English Professionals upon fulfilling the attendance requirement of 75% or above by the end of the course. If you are not able to attend class for a medical or work related reason, please do inform us in advance so we can inform your teacher. Please note that there are no make-up lessons for lessons missed.
